How would a textile system based on minimising the intake of natural resources as well as the output of waste look like? Minna will outline a system geared towards long material and product lifetimes. She offers a research-based imagery of interlinked materials, design, business models, production, consumption and legislative solution with which to put in practice a textile system relying on a circular valueretention hierarchy and sufficiency-based consumtion.

Professor Dilys Williams is founder and Director of Centre for Sustainable Fashion, a University of the Arts London Research Centre, based at London College of Fashion, exploring fashion as sustainability in action with researchers and businesses across the world. Dilys is also chair of UAL’s Social Purpose Advisory Group, re-purposing the university in the context of our times.

Designing for circularity: Data, transparency, longevity and recycling
Currently garments are designed to be included into a linear model where material throughput in the system is fast. This means that short live trends and price issues lead the design process. When we move towards the circular system design need to be based on product longevity and material recyclability. More data and transparency are needed to enable textile and fashion circularity.

Production volumes for existing manufactured fiber processes are expanding rapidly, while new technologies continue to emerge. At the same time, it is increasingly clear that fibers introduced to the market must be recycled once the products reach the end of their lifecycle. Michael will provide an overview of the market and emerging technologies, highlighting the challenges and opportunities in recycling cellulose-based textiles.

Many textile-producing countries exhibit informality in various ways—through networks, clustering, employment contracts, and business structures—yet existing circular economy policies, such as Extended Producer Responsibility and Digital Product tracking, often conflict with these realities. To ensure an effective circular transition, policies and frameworks must be designed not for but with informal actors, recognizing their contributions in an inclusive and just circular system.

Jari on kestävän kehityksen ja kiertotalouden puolestapuhuja yrittäjyyden näkökulmasta, korostaen häiriköiden merkitystä lineaarisen talouden muuttamisessa. Rinnakkaistalous ei ole ainoastaan uusien liiketoimintamallien poissulkemista normaalista kilpailuympäristöstä, vaan myös niiden vahingoittamista erilaisuutensa vuoksi.
